Board of Publication, Spring 2012

Don Wink, Chair

The Board of Publication is pleased to report on the work done by our editorial staff, led by the Editor in Chief Norb Pienta and with the support of Managing Editor Jon Holmes. In the past several months two important changes have occurred at the Journal, with two new associate editors: Greg Rushton of Kennesaw State University with specific responsibilities in K-12 chemical education and Marcy Towns of Purdue University with specific responsibilities for Chemical Education Research. Deanna Cullen, a high school teacher in Whitehall, MI, joins Greg in helping to lead our precollege section. We are glad that Erica Jacobsen and Laura Slocum will continue to assist in specific aspects in high school chemistry.

We wish to bring two activities to the attention of the Executive Committee. First, the Board agreed in December to allow the Journal to be part of the Society’s new ACS Member Universal Access benefit, which permits all ACS members to have free downloads of up to 25 articles from any ACS journal. We see this as a significant way to bring our Journal to the wider ACS member community.

Second, we are proceeding with further tasks to arrange for the proper disposition of materials from our Web site. We have agreed to work with ACS Publications to make all materials that were directly associated with a Journal article available at ACS Publications. This includes a significant number of non-text supplementary materials (for example, in the JCE Featured Molecules, WebWare, and SymMath series) that were not moved when the Journal was relocated to the ACS Publications site. In addition, we are inventorying all other materials, including software, videos, and the like. We will then consider how best to manage these, whether on our own site, in association with the ChemEdDL, or with ACS Publications.
