I’m happy to report that the Two-Year College Chemistry Consortium (2YC3) ended 2011 in great shape. Our membership continues to be strong at about 500 members. We are continuing to sponsor four conferences per year, plus a fifth conference during the BCCE. The COCTYC continues to work closely with the ACS Office of Two-Year Colleges (OTYC). The COCTYC is also collaborating with a SOCED task force to develop a mechanism for recognizing excellence for two-year college chemistry programs. We are also fortunate to have a dedicated and supporting group of officers who continue to work diligently year-round. A complete list of 2012 officers can be found at our website (2yc3.org).
The 193th 2YC3 Conference was held on September 16-17 at the Melbourne Campus of Brevard Community College (Florida). Mary Roslonowski served as program chair, Susan Styron as local arrangements chair, and Cristina Moisii and Tatiana Zuvich as exhibits coordinators, all of whom are faculty members of BCC. Approximately 75 members were in attendance.
The 194th Conference was held on November 11-12 at the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College (Maryland). The theme was “Designing Chemistry Courses for the 21st Century: Community Colleges as Centers of Excellence for the First Two Years.” The organizing committee consisted of Virginia Miller and Sripriya Seetharaman (program co-chair), Nevart Tahmazian (local arrangements), and Rachel Ndonye (exhibits coordinator), all of whom are faculty members of Montgomery College. Approximately 90 members were in attendance.
Neil Bastian of Salt Lake Community College was elected as Chair Elect 2014 and will serve as 2YC3 Chair in 2014. Neil served as Program Chair for the 184th Conference. He has also been a member of the Western Regional Advisory Board (RAB) for the past three years. Julie Ellefson-Kuehn of Harper College in Palatine, IL agreed to serve a second term as 2YC3 Treasurer and College Sponsors Chair. Her second term runs through 2015. Julie has done an excellent job with our finances and we appreciate her willingness to complete another term. I would like to thank Jeff Cramer, our outgoing officer, for his years of service to this organization. Jeff served as Treasurer, College Sponsors Chair, Chair, and CHED Liaison.
