New Member Committee Report, Spring 2013

Deborah Herrington (herringd@gvsu.edu)

The New Member committee (NMC) is focused on welcoming new members to the division and looking for new ways to help meet the needs of our new members. This past summer the NMC organized and facilitated the Division’s third New Members lunch at the 2012 BCCE at Penn State. Although we call this the New Members Welcome Lunch, it is open to all members. We thank the Penn State BCCE organizers for doing a great job of highlighting the NMC lunch in the online program and for providing us with a wonderful space to meet. We would also like to thank all of the Division members joined us so that they could meet some of our newer members and answer questions about the Division. We had over 120 people in attendance at the event.

In addition to this event, the NMC had two other major projects this year. The first was the development of a Division information card and a Division poster, both of which were “unveiled” at the New Member lunch at Penn State. Thanks to Dan King, Tom Pentecost, and especially Heather Johnson for all their hard work on this project. The second project involved trying to reach out to new members at Regional Meetings. We would like to thank Cheryl Frech for serving as the DivChed representative at the South West Regional Meeting. She presented the new DivChed poster during the Tuesday evening poster session and was able to talk to a number of people about the activities of the Division. We are always interested in new and innovative ideas about how we can meet the needs of our new members so if you have any ideas, please share them with us!

Let us know what we can do to help serve you better. There are a number of venues available, both face-to-face and virtual, and we would love to hear from you!
