International Activities Committee Report, Spring 2015

After several years of dedicated service to the Division and the International Activities Committee, Carmen Valdez-Gauthier has rotated off the committee. Charles Atwood has assumed the chair of the committee. The committee appreciates the hard work Carmen has done over the last several years. We will miss her guidance.

The committee continues its efforts to promote issues on global education by organizing or co-sponsoring programs both nationally and internationally. Resa Kelley has received funding through the Division Activities Committee and the ACS-International Activities committee to develop a traveling symposium that will appear at American and Canadian Chemical Society meetings. Details on the symposium “Uniting International Chemical Societies through a Traveling Symposium” are still being hashed out. This symposium is centered on education for sustainable development and technological innovations. Dr. Sandi-Urena’s grant allowed him to attend the first meeting of chemical education research and practices of the Americas at the Latin American Chemistry Congress (CLAQ) in Lima-Peru and he is now working on establishing a Chemical Education Network of the Americas (CENA). Both activities will be discussed at our Denver committee meeting.

In conjunction with the International Activities Office of ACS, several committee members attended the Latin American Chemistry Congress (CLAQ) in Lima-Peru including Carmen Valdez-Gauthier, Santiago Sandi-Urena, and Charles Atwood. Additionally two Division members, Melanie Cooper and Maria Oliver-Hoyo, gave presentations at CLAQ. Eight undergraduate students from around the US also attended the CLAQ meeting, presented research presentations (in Spanish) at the education symposium, and volunteered at the Festival de Quimica, which occurred on October 14, 2014 in downtown Lima.

A second initiative planned with the International Activities Office of ACS is to attend and participate in the 38th Reuinao Anual da Sociedade Brasileria de Quimica to be held in Aguas de Lindao, Brazil on May 25th to 28th, 2015. If the details are ironed out, a contingent of DivCHED members will attend the meeting to interact with Brazilian Educators and open some discussion about international Chem Ed activities.

Charles Atwood and Santiago Sandi-Urena have submitted a paper to the European Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Education Network (EC2E2N) newsletter explaining the purpose of the International Activities Committee and inviting collaborations. The paper will be published in the February edition of the EC2E2N newsletter.

The CHED-IAC International Travel Award was awarded to Wendy Schatzbergof Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. Wendy plans to attend the European Science Education Research Association Conference in Helsinki, Finland August 31, 2015 to September 4, 2015. There she will present a paper on student misconceptions transferring knowledge between chemistry lecture and laboratory. Wendy will attend the committee meeting at the Denver ACS meeting.

CHED Travel Award

The award is designed to support a DivCHED member who attends and fully participates in an international chemical education conference held outside the U.S. Preference is given to junior and/or under-represented faculty members who have not had the opportunity to attend an international meeting in chemical education.
