We have had a few personnel changes on the Board to share with the Division. We first recognize the important contributions made by member Pratibha Varma-Nelson (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) and give our sincerest thanks her for expertise and service to DivCHED as Board member. We wish her all the best as Director of the IUPUI STEM Education Innovation and Research Institute. We welcome Frank Torre (Springfield College) to the Board. Some of us had the pleasure of working with Frank when he chaired DivCHED, and all look forward to serving alongside him on the Board.
In other personnel news, the Board elected Ellen Yezierski (former Interim Chair) to serve as Chair beginning January 2017. The Board is deeply grateful to immediate past Chair Chris Bauer for his service to the Board as Chair and previously as Treasurer. Chris managed the finances and later the operations of the Board beginning in the earliest stages of the Journal’s transition to our co-publication agreement with ACS Publications, ending his tenure in 2016. Chris’ vision, efficiency, and inclusive leadership has helped to systematize and optimize procedures, ensure financial stability, and advance the vehicles by which the Division serves it members through publication. Thank you so very much, Chris!
The Board continues to invite Division members interested in leadership positions to serve as Board Associates. Board Associates participate in the next two Board meetings held before the ACS fall and spring meetings. Associates may be nominated by Board members or by the Committee on Personnel and Nominations. Strong nomination statements describe why the candidate was interested in serving, identify whether the person had published in the Journal in the last five years, list service in other governance positions, and highlight experience with fiduciary responsibilities. Any DivCHED member interested in a Board Associate appointment may submit their name and statement to any Board member or the Division Executive Assistant. Associates will be reimbursed for travel expenses in accordance with CHED Division policy (transportation and additional night’s stay).
At our last meeting in Philadelphia, the Board established the Chemical Education Xchange as a platform separate from the Journal and under the management of Board of Publication of the Division of Chemical Education beginning January 1, 2017. The Board has appointed Jon Holmes (University of Wisconsin-Madison) as Editor-In-Chief of the Chemical Education Xchange, and the Board will work with Jon and other ChemEdX leadership to support and grow this important platform. Congratulations, Jon!
The Board has established a time line for the appointment of the next Journal Editor. The Board also established plans for a smooth, efficient, and transparent editor transition when Norb’s term concludes at the end of 2019.
