The Committee on Chemistry in Two-Year Colleges (COCTYC) is the executive committee governing the Two-Year College Chemistry Consortium, 2YC 3 . 2YC 3 is an external membership organization that is primarily charged with enhancing student learning by providing a national forum for educators teaching in the first two years of college chemistry. The COCTYC currently facilitates 2YC 3 goals by coordinating professional development conferences, webinars, and community forums while also publishing newsletters and providing online resources.
2YC 3 participated in our strategic planning retreat (SPR) this past October. Participation included representatives from current 2YC3 leadership, SOCED, past 2YC3 members, Chemical Education Research, DivCHED, CPT, CTA, and ACS Office of Higher Education. We now have new Vision and Mission statements as follows:
Vision: Advancing first- and second year college chemistry education
Mission: Building community, supporting professional development, and advocating for first- and second-year college chemistry faculty
Currently the board has formed a number of subcommittees to discuss various aspects of our SPR and how to implement achieving our new mission. We anticipate a change to our committee structure this year to better align with our Mission. This will most likely involve dissolving some positions and creating new ones. We look forward to these changes and know 2YC3 will better serve our members with this important work. ACS DIVISION OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION, INC. Consent Agenda Report Form – Fall 2023 We continue to report that recruitment for leadership positions has been difficult, and this continues to be so. We hope the possible restructuring of our COCYTC committee will improve the interest in leadership within our membership. We anticipate holding an election in the very near future for Chair Elect 2024.
We have restarted our monthly webinars this January. We plan to continue these even as we move back to in-person conferences. Our first post-COVID in-person conference is hopefully slated for Fall 2024 at Portland Community College in Portland, OR. Currently there are tentative plans for a Spring 2025 conference at Johnson County Community College in Kansas City, KS. We are exploring other options for meetings not specific to an individual 2-year school, but possibly held near large airports to encourage attendance for those that can attend nationwide.
2YC 3 ’s revenue model is primarily membership driven. Current memberships year to date have been stagnant compared to last year at this time. It is of note that while our membership has roughly halved from years immediately before the pandemic, and at 30% of levels from a decade ago. We are addressing our revenue model along with our membership structure as a result of the strategic planning retreat.
